This book is based on the years I travel in the so-called Middle East – in the Muslim world between Morocco and Pakistan. And in Israel.<\/p>\n
Between 1997 and 2003, I went up and down the Sinai wadis in conversations and monitoring opium and cannabis cultivation. The destruction of the Bedouin, and the equality of the Egyptian government for what is not money coming from tourism or drugs in the peninsula were visible.<\/p>\n
In 2003 I covered the war in Iraq and spent April and May on an intense journey between the Euphrates and the Tigris and into the Iraqi desert. There too the land crumbled but there it happened as a result of an external process and not an internal decay. After many years under the rule of Saddam Hussein, anarchy was almost uncontrollable. So I also saw the birth of the Islamic State even if it was not called that. It was easy to see the American mistakes. Anyone could see them. Except for the Americans.<\/p>\n
In the years that followed I traveled to Afghanistan to see the lack of success there which manifested itself in breaking a loose state alongside internal decay and wars of war lords. In the Sahel south of North Africa, the spiers of the new mosques stood out, marking the spread of Wahhabism and the introduction of religious institutions to undermine loose stability in weakened and hopeless countries. Mali was corrupt and its inhabitants only thought about how to immigrate to Europe. The war that will break out in Libya and prevent work from the residents of Niger Mali and Chad, will direct them in their desperation north, to cross the sea.<\/p>\n
In 2008, I went to the Passover Seder with the Jews in Yemen, where they were attacked by the Houthis because the pro-American government, which had good relations with Israel, protected them. Yemen for the past decades, is a loose country as a result of tribal history and large forces that are constantly intervening and undermining.<\/p>\n
At the beginning of 2011 I traveled to South Sudan and thought in a burst of optimism that a worthy country would emerge here. I was wrong. But the failure of the UN and aid organizations (with a modest Israeli contribution) is much more embarrassing. Sudan, north and south, is a source of refugees being exploited and pushed by Islamic traffickers and opportunists. , Again to Egypt, to Tripoli, to Tunis, to Sinai to understand how the smuggling and refugee system works, and again to Iraq, Turkey and Syria, to the Kurds and the Arabs and ISIS members.<\/p>\n
I was in most of the revolutions, I traveled, wrote and photographed for many media outlets in all media.<\/p>\n
The book is an attempt to paint a picture of the Middle East. What and how it happened, what is happening and what are the forces operating it. A journalistic travel book is based on information and knowledge acquired during travel and interviews and from the analysis of visible media information – written and electronic press and websites. All of these are collected and connected in order to construct and assemble the picture of reality that is vague, noisy and unclear. Most of the book is from the things I saw or heard, and the publications and news I read or watched during the work months. All of these contributed to updating things. I tried to list the sources in the bibliographic list and attach the web address to them. Most of the sources I used came from the internet although some printed books are also mentioned.<\/p>\n
One can of course quote the father of traveling journalists – Herodotus, who said 2500 years ago – many I have seen and many have told me, I do not know if this is true and if this is the truth, but that is what I am writing. This is how the world looks to me from where I stand.<\/p>\n
